Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya is the third Sanskrit university in India. Established by the Government of Orissa, the university is located in Puri in the state. It has played a vital role in the development and promotion of Sanskrit in the state as well as the country. The ambience provided by the university is ideal for study and research in the field of Sanskrit. The university has dedicated itself to the cause of preserving and promoting studies and research in the language. A member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya has been recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC).
Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya has been making tremendous
efforts to bring back the rich tradition of Sanskrit language and literature, which was on the edge of disappearance. It encourages research associated with the oldest language of the world - Sanskrit. The university is devoted to the cause of safeguarding the rich ancient tradition of the language. It offers variety of courses in a number of disciplines, at multitude level.
Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya provides separate hostel facilities for men and women, named 'Vishvanath Kaviraj Chhatrabas' and 'Brahmi Chhatrabas', respectively. Both the hostels are located within the premises of the university. The magnificent structure of the institution's library contains a wide collection of books and journals. So far, the library has a collection of twenty two thousand and seven hundred thirty one books. The university also provides the facility of scholarship to its students.
Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya was established in 1981. In past eighteen years, the university has seen tremendous growth in its infrastructure and the courses offered. The university has been shifted from a small room in Puri Raj Bhawan to its present spacious campus, located in Puri.
