Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, situated in Hyderabad, is the first technical university in India. Popularly known as JNTU, the university was named after the name of former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. JNTU was established with the purpose of imparting and improving the standards of higher technical education in India in general and in the state in particular. The university also has its campus in the districts of Kakinada and Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) with 'A' Grade, for its academic excellence. The university is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is recognized and funded by University Grants Commission (UGC). The distance education mode of JNTU is being recognized by Distance Education Council (DEC). The university is imparting quality technical education in the state, for the past four decades.
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University is the leading technical
university in India, conducting a variety of courses through its various schools and the colleges. The colleges affiliated to JNTU work as autonomous bodies in imparting education in diverse fields. JNTU also offers engineering at under graduate level, through its distance education programme. The university has also initiated its efforts in promoting research and development. It offers bachelors, masters and doctoral level education in various disciplines, which include engineering, pharmacy, business administration and computer application. It provides research courses in diverse fields as well.
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University provides a lavish library with a wide collection of books and journals, catering to the diverse needs of its students. Video tapes on various subjects are also available in the library. The university has established different cells, catering to the diverse need of the students. These cells includes - Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), Bureau of Industrial Consultancy Services (BICS), The National Service Scheme (NSS), A Grievance Redressal Cell, Centre for Career Advancement and Resource Development (CARD), Post-office and Health-care centre.
Academic Staff College (ASC) was introduced by to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, in order to keep its Principals, Heads and Lecturers up-to-date. Exclusive R&D cell has been opened to monitor the research activities. Scholarships are also provided by the university, especially to the deprived students. Training & Placement Cell has also been started by JNTU, in order to provide guidelines to the students, regarding their career options.
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University was established on October 2, 1972, by an Act of State Legislature. The university was originally named as Hyderabad Polytechnic Institute, before it was rechristened to JNTU. Government Engineering Colleges at Anantapur, Kakinada and Hyderabad and Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture (Hyderabad) became integral parts of JNTU.
The Govt. College of Engineering, Anantapur and Govt. College of Engineering, Kakinada, were established in 1946. Nagarjuna Sagar College of Engineering Hyderabad was incepted in 1965. In 1972, all the aforementioned colleges came under the umbrella of JNTU. Over the years, the university has grown into one of the most prestigious universities in Andhra Pradesh. A number of engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh have been affiliated to the university.
